Do this when you first get into your car. The most obvious one is your gas gauge.

Make sure all your instruments and gauges work! As you drive, glance down at the instruments and gauges regularly. Make sure there are no warning lights on.

Don’t forget the big one the speedometer. Keep it below the posted speed limit. Speeding tickets don’t contribute to a safe driving record and they are certainly not consistent with a defensive driving attitude.
