Habit #4 is to "Leave Yourself an Out".
In case of trouble you need an escape route. If you maintain a proper space cushion around your vehicle, you’ll have a better chance of leaving yourself an escape route.
In many cases your “out”, will be to your right.
Here’s an example. Someone comes toward you over the centerline from the opposite direction. If you steer to the left, they may suddenly realize what they are doing — and instinctively swerve back to THEIR RIGHT — RIGHT INTO YOU. Instead, in this situation, steer to your right and keep going, even if it means going into the ditch.
That’s a much better option than a head-on crash. Always be prepared to avoid trouble by leaving yourself an out.
