Defensive driving has one main goal and that is the prevention of all vehicle accidents in spite of:

1. Adverse conditions - this can refer to:

Light conditions or time of day
Weather, such as rain, snow, fog, heat, cold, glare, bright sun
Road conditions - narrow, smooth, rough, potholes, no shoulder
Road type - concrete, asphalt, gravel
Traffic - type and amount
Vehicle condition
Our physical or mental condition - how we feel

2. Incorrect actions of others - you can probably tell dozens of horror stories about the other guy on the road! Driving defensively means that you are able to react to others to avoid an accident.
